Bartosz Grzybowski

Affiliation:Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) / Center for Algorithmic and Robotized Synthesis (CARS), Institute for Basic Science (IBS)

Bartosz A. Grzybowski graduated summa cum laude from Yale University in 1995 and received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard in 2000. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, he joined the faculty of Northwestern University in 2003 and in 2009 became Kenneth Burgess Professor of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Systems’ Engineering. From 2009 he directed the DoE Non-Equilibrium Research Center at Northwestern. In late 2014 he moved to Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) where he is now a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and also Director at the Center for Algorithmic and Robotized Synthesis (CARS), Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Korea.

Prof Grzybowski is one of the global pioneers of computational synthesis planning and applications of chemical AI in the discovery of new functional molecules and materials –– this work has given rise to the creation of the Chematica/Synthia platform for computerized retrosynthesis of complex molecules, including natural products (Nature 2020a), as well as the Allchemy software for the discovery of new synthetic methodologies and new functional molecules (Science 2020, Nature 2022).

He has so far received more than a dozen of the most important American and European science awards for the most outstanding chemists, including the American Chemical Society Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry Unilever Award, the Nanoscience Prize, the Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology, the Soft Matter Lectureship of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Pew Scholarship, Sloan Research Fellowship, and NIH NCATS ASPIRE Award. In 2015, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was invited to deliver a plenary lecture in 2023 at the 49ᵗʰ IUPAC World Chemistry Congress in The Hague, Netherlands.
